The last time I saw a mermaid was during a boat ride in September.

The August water dreams of cornflowers, robin eggs, plums and cotton candy. Come September, and the lake is a treasure box full of nostalgic madeleines, sachet forget-me-nots, fauns with sky-blue eyes, and bed-time lullabies – it is mysterious. I looked into the water, which was pulling me in (in the same way a canyon pulls you in when looking down) and I swear I saw a mermaid. It accrued to me she could snatch me by the ankle and drag deep into the viscous inky underwater kingdom.
